When Worlds Collide

As a network television writer producer by day, and a self-avowed ocean liner aficionado by night, imagine how thrilled I was to be asked to write an episode of the CBS hit series “Ghost Whisperer” set aboard the famously haunted RMS Queen Mary.  Entitled “Save our Souls,” the entire episode (save for four scenes) was shot aboard the fabled ocean liner from July 22 through 30, 2008, and takes place aboard a fictional liner on her last historic voyage.  I’ve put this small site together for Ghost Whisperer and Queen Mary fans alike.

The episode required seven full location days aboard the ship (which presented its own set of challenges given the configuration of steps, elevators, decks, etc.)  We shot in most of the major public spaces aboard the ship, and used one of the suites on M-Deck to double as two.    The Queen’s Salon became the 1st Class Dining Room.  We also filmed in the M-Deck lobby, inside the old Travel Bureau office there, in the Observation Bar, and our extraordinary art director transformed the Mauretania Room into the “Duck Suite” (the ship’s owner’s suite) as well as other spaces aboard ship.   We even used the aft starboard lifeboat and our amazing visual effects team created stunning CGI that puts the ship out to sea!

In the episode, Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a woman who can see and talk to the dead, travels aboard the ship’s final voyage with her husband Jim (David Conrad).  Along the way, she encounters various ghosts who require her attention.  There are several inside winks to ocean liner and ocean liner movie fans within the episode.

I hope you enjoy the photographs, and respectfully request that you don’t copy them.
